Pashmina vs Cashmere – What Is the Real Difference?

While related by fibre family, Pashmina and Cashmere are not the same — and should never be used interchangeably.

Fibre Origin

  • Pashmina: Changthangi goat, Ladakh (extremely rare)

  • Cashmere: Various goat breeds across multiple countries

Processing

  • Pashmina can be machine-spun but Allways hand-woven

  • Cashmere is often machine-processed and mass-produced

 Legal Status

  • Pashmina is protected under GI law

  • Cashmere has no geographic or legal protection

 Why the Confusion Is Deliberate

Many sellers intentionally blur the difference to justify blends and mass-produced products. This practice is misleading and erodes the integrity of authentic Pashmina craftsmanship.
